About Gary
Early Life and Career
Gary was born to Otto and Alice Wolf and grew up in Phoenix, Arizona. While being raised alongside his older sister Carole, his love for sports, particularly baseball, began to grow.
His dad Otto was a fabulous baseball player, coach, and manager. Otto managed semi-professional teams in central Phoenix for decades and coached Gary as a youth through his teen years.
Gary attended St. Mary’s High School and would often say, “Once a Knight, always a Knight!” Gary was blessed with tremendous athletic ability.
He played baseball and football for the Knights throughout his whole high school career, but 1961, his senior year, was a year of all years for Gary.
Gary was selected to the All-State baseball team that year. That great year continued for Gary as he played for the American Legion team “Kerr’s Sporting Goods,” which went on to win the National Championship that summer in Hastenings, Nebraska, home of the American Legion World Series. Gary was awarded a college scholarship to play baseball at Phoenix College.
