About Gary

Early Life and Career
Gary was born to Otto and Alice Wolf and grew up in Phoenix, Arizona.  While being raised alongside his older sister Carole, his love for sports, particularly baseball, began to grow.

His dad Otto was a fabulous baseball player, coach, and manager.  Otto managed semi-professional teams in central Phoenix for decades and coached Gary as a youth through his teen years.

Gary attended St. Mary’s High School and would often say, “Once a Knight, always a Knight!”  Gary was blessed with tremendous athletic ability.

He played baseball and football for the Knights throughout his whole high school career, but 1961, his senior year, was a year of all years for Gary.

Gary was selected to the All-State baseball team that year. That great year continued for Gary as he played for the American Legion team “Kerr’s Sporting Goods,” which went on to win the National Championship that summer in Hastenings, Nebraska, home of the American Legion World Series.  Gary was awarded a college scholarship to play baseball at Phoenix College.

In his first year, the Phoenix College Bears went on to win the Junior College World Series National Championship in 1962. Two national Championships in less than one year.

The next season the Bears fell just short of another Championship in 1963. Gary went on to play one season for the NAU Lumberjacks before deciding that it was just too cold to play baseball in Flagstaff.

Gary came back to Phoenix and attended ASU, where he attempted to walk on the baseball team, falling just one player short of making the team that year.

Gary began coaching baseball when his son Gary (Michael) began playing T-Ball. He coached every year thereafter as little Gary progressed each year through little league and right up to the start of high school, where he let go of the reigns.

He made many impressions on many boys through the years as the coach that everyone remembers and loves to this day.  His dedication and passion for teaching the game stood out to everyone, and he was known for always making time for every boy when extra help or practice was needed.

When it came to Gary’s family, nothing was more important to him than it.  He shared 50 amazing years with his wife, Marlene.  They have two children, Gary Michael and Rae Lyn. He was very close to his older sister Carole Schwietz and her two daughters, Marian Wiedow and Jennifer Rosvall.
When it came to his six grandchildren, he was on cloud nine and would do anything for them.  His weekend schedule was attending all the grandchildren’s games he could attend.
